Buried was one of the DLC maps for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, and it is one of the main reasons players consistently call for a Zombies Chronicles 2 expansion to be made. Buried’s unique concept of an old Western town stuck underground instantly made the map unique, and it featured memorable gameplay mechanics like the ghost house and Arthur. Its main quest was also the best of the Victis crew’s by far, and it is clearly one that stuck with Redditor YT_Vrykofen.

Back in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Zombies, the concept of an outro cutscene had not yet been normalized. TranZit, Die Rise, and even the story-focused Mob of the Dead lacked such a scene at the end of their easter eggs, with Origins being the map that normalized the concept. With Buried coming before Origins, it lacked an end cutscene, which is significant since it was hugely important for the Aether storyline. Fortunately, YT_Vrykofen is seeking to give the map the love it deserves.

The brief work-in-progress footage shows Misty, Marlton, Stuhlinger, and Russman being shocked as Maxis speaks to them. Some nifty camera work pans across the screen to show the characters looking around, with the Call of Duty Zombies fan doing a fine job of capturing the dark ending’s overall mood. While there are two options players have to choose from, the Redditor chose the canon Maxis ending for their scene, which serves as the end of the original Aether universe.

In this ending, Ludvig Maxis reveals that his true plans are not to heal the earth, instead wanting to destroy it so that he could open the gateway to Agartha. His goal was to rescue his daughter, Samantha Maxis, and the only way to do so was to remove his dimension’s earth from existence. The Redditor’s cutscene would likely feature earth’s destruction, as well as something involving Samantha’s move into Agartha – properly connecting Buried to Origins. Samantha’s father punishing Richtofen by forcing him to inhabit a Zombie’s body could be highlighted as well, as the single blue-eyed undead is a memorable visual. Unsurprisingly, fans have responded well to YT_Vrykofen’s plan to make an end cutscene for the map, with QuintDrummer13 adding that they wish the Victis maps had live action cutscenes as well.

Clearly, many Call of Duty Zombies players still have a deep appreciation for the Victis maps. While it remains to be seen if they will return through a standalone Call of Duty Zombies game or Zombies Chronicles 2, the community would undoubtedly jump on the opportunity to play Buried again.
