Thankfully the series managed to find its footing in the third episode. Everything began to settle in, and the story finally found the perfect balance between romance and comedy while moving the story forward at the same time. So can this fourth episode keep the momentum going?

Nagi and Erika are forced to live together in the same house by their parents. The two were at odds at first and decided that the best course of action was to limit their interactions while under the same roof. However, both quickly realize that it is more beneficial for them to actually help each other.
After all, there are things that they can’t do by themselves. Such as when Nagi got a fever and Erika had to take care of him, or how Nagi is always the one who does the cooking because Erika doesn’t even know how to use the tools in the kitchen. Those kinds of interactions end up making them both feel more comfortable around each other.
In school, Nagi also works hard to take first place in the upcoming exam in his school. The reason is simply because he has a crush on the current top-ranked student, a popular girl named Hiro Segawa. He asked her once about the type of guy that she likes, and her answer is “someone who is smarter than her”. So Nagi used every waking hour to study for the exam just so he could finally confess his feelings to Hiro.
The Story of Episode 4: Will You Please Be My Girlfriend…?
Against all odds, Nagi manages to take the number one spot from Hiro. She asks him why he is so fixated on beating her, and that’s when Nagi musters up his courage and confesses his feelings to Hiro. Needless to say, she is shocked by the sudden confession.
Unfortunately, Hiro then tells Nagi that she can’t accept his feelings because she is already engaged to another man. Needless to say, Nagi is even more shocked by the sudden revelation. However, their relationship finally moves on from a couple of strangers to a rival, so Nagi still feels quite satisfied at the end.

On another note, the time to live in the house together with Erika has finally ended. However, Nagi’s house is currently under renovation, so he has to get back to the communal house. Much to his surprise, Erika apparently still lives there.
Sachi, Nagi’s sister who is actually Erika’s biological sister, decides to visit the house. Both Sachi and Erika are nervous by their first official meeting, but they quickly get along pretty well. After all, Erika always wanted to have a younger sister, while Sachi admires how beautiful and confident Erika is. As for Nagi, well, he ends up having to cook for both of them.
The Harem Assembles
After teasing us since the first episode, we finally get to see Nagi interact with all three girls who supposedly have romantic feelings for him. In the case of Hiro, it is still her first proper interaction with Nagi, but the sign of her being the third love interest is loud and clear in this episode. Seeing how her feelings for him will start to blossom in the future is another reason why this episode serves as a good foundation for subsequent episodes.
Erika has been the main heroine right from the start of the series, and she has received quite a decent development so far. That is why it is so refreshing to see the attention finally shift to other characters. Erika still has a decent amount of screen time and development, but knowing more facts about Hiro and finding out how Sachi truly feels about Erika is certainly the highlight of this series.
Minor Character Development
The stars of this episode are clearly the three girls, Nagi, Sachi, and Hiro. And as mentioned in the previous section, they all received their fair share of character development. It is just a minor character development, after all, this is just one episode, but it is still definitely there.
Each girl gets a different amount of development as a character, with Erika getting the least of the bunch. Which is understandable considering that she has been the star for all previous episodes. The biggest development certainly comes from Hiro, with Sachi sitting comfortably in second place.
Episode 4 of A Couple of Cuckoos is easily the best one in the series so far. The character interaction is amazing, the new information that we get from the girls manage to nicely builds our expectation to learn more about them in the future, and it manages to tell a rather heartwarming story in such a limited amount of time while keeping an even pacing throughout the episode. Definitely looking forward to the next episode.
