U.S. Customs is investigating whether smugglers have also attempted to illegally export weapons from the United States. Last October two Albanians traveling from Los Angeles to the Albanian capital of Tirana were questioned at Rome’s Fiumicino airport. The men were allegedly attempting to ship four American-made semiautomatic sniper rifles and a cache of armor-piercing ammunition. The men claimed the guns were hunting rifles. Curiously, they were released when baggage handlers loaded the suspect cargo onto an outgoing flight, never to be seen again.
