While previous screenshots presented fans with a good look at the Orcs and Khajiit of Skyrim, it wasn’t until this week that Bethesda released the very first image of what the updated Dunmer look like in Skyrim so read on for your first look.

The Dark Elves, a common fantasy-role-playing race, hold a deep history in Elder Scrolls lore, and a reserved people who find themselves entrenched in tradition, a variety of religions and even in outlaw tribes.

Players will know them as quite a balanced type of character to choose, one that can master any class, and one that is rather proficient in weapons and destructive magic. Visually, the Dunmer have grey, ash-colored skin and red-colored eyes, which make them one of the more distinct looking races in the Elder Scrolls games. They’re also naturally resistant to fire, which should help them against many of the dragons players will face while exploring Skyrim.

Notice the added detail to the ears, nose and face. It’s fitting that our first look at the Dunmer, depicts a Dark Elf dual-wielding bladed weapons while exemplifying intensity through his facial expression. That is exactly how I pictured the Dark Elf character I played through The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind twice with.

We’ve not seen the statistical breakdown of the different races yet for Skyrim so it’s difficult to know with certainly which type of character we will aim to build, but the Dunmer will always hold a space place for me.

If you’re as excited as we are for the sequel to Oblivion, be sure to check out the The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Collector’s Edition details.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim releases November 11, 2011 for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
